On the winning side of the format war, Sony Corporation can now focus more on other businesses like that of OLED (organic LED) panels. Although it has already released its first OLED TV the company is now looking to use the technology to make panels that are larger than 11-inches and for that it has decided to invest about $203 million. The money will help develop the means and iron out the bugs that would stand in the way of making medium and large OLED panels. The move is set to help the c

It’s always hard to say if new TV technologies will take off, or fall flat. Just look at HD DVD. Three or four months ago, it was hot. Prices for players were dropping drastically and the HD disc format looked like it may take the format war with Blu-ray just based on its much cheaper price. But how things change. One of the newer TV technologies making waves right now is OLED TV. The buzz surrounding the first commercially available OLED TV, the Sony XEL-1, has been huge. Even though the set m

A very thorough video clip from IDG covering OLED TV at CES 2008. The part that interested me is the interview with the Samsung spokesperson. He states that they are very price conscious and will not release an OLED TV until it is at a price level similar to an equal sized LCD TV. That may take a while as mass production facilities aren’t up and running yet. Even Sony has stated that mass manufacturing of OLED TV’s will be a “challenge”. Enough from me, enjoy the video.

In Tokyo this week for the White LEDs 07 conference, we wandered into the Sony showroom and saw at first hand the company’s 11-inch OLED TV, which went on sale mid November.Production is limited to 2,000 units per month, and so most sales will be made through advance orders at major retail outlets. The 11-inch TV costs 200,000 yen including tax (around $1800).

The world’s first OLED TV is incredibly thin, measuring only 3 mm at its thinnest point, and provides an excellent image even at very wide viewing angles.
