Hot off the presses so to speak. A preemptive OLED TV strike by Sony one day before CES2008:LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sony Corp. on Sunday said it is introducing to the U.S. market a high-quality organic LED television only as thick as three stacked credit cards.
The 11-inch XEL-1 television, to go on sale this month, is Sony‘s first television for the U.S. to use organic light-emitting diode technology, which enables superior picture quality on super-thin displays. The company also is demonstrating a prototype 20-inch version at the Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas.
The XEL-1 has a contrast ratio — the difference between maximum and minimum brightness — of 1 million to one, because pixels can be turned off completely for a near-perfect black. That compares with 30,000 to one for a good conventional flat-panel TV, which can’t show a perfect black.
The high picture quality comes at a hefty price: about $2,500 for the XEL-1. It sold for $1,700 at its launch in Japan in December.

OLEDS are certainly cool, but I really took issue with the “look how thin it is!!” marketing BS in my Audio/Video mag. Yeah, thin, unless you look at the HUGE base station underneath it. So, if it were oriented on the back of the panel, how exactly would it be thinner than an LCD?Not debating the superiority of the quality and contract, though. OLED is definitely the future. But more work needs to be done on creating thinner circuits for the drivers.If SONY just left off the *shell game* of “Look at how thin it is!” from their promo hype (hence inflated price driven purely by marketing) the world would be a slightly better place. It is an insulting marketing ploy. How thin would LCDs be if you moved all of it's electronics to a huge base station? My laptop screen is pretty darn thin, too.I predict the XEL-1 will flop because most people just aren't that stupid. Hopefully OLED TV technology survives it, though.
Yes, Hancock sucked. I don't agree with anything else. Sony's OLED TV is breathtaking. And Sony was the *first* to do an eInk-based eBook device, so they are the pioneers in that area. They've done three generations of it, more than any other company.

I don't see anything weird about the fragrance they release in the store. If they know that women tend to buy more then you need to appeal to them as much as you can. I think I've been to 3 of these Sony Style stores and I haven't noticed any manufactured aroma.

You should make sure you know what you are talking about before critiquing other people. An LED is an LCD. So its easy to mix up the names. The proper name of an LED is “LED LCD”. The difference between the older LCD and the newer LED LCD is the back lighting. LED has LED lighting while older LCD has florescent lighting.
