OLED TV at CES 2010

While 3D TV is getting a lot of attention in Las Vegas this week, there are new OLED TV models expected.

The rumours are that Sony may introduce an OLED TV larger than the XEL-1, perhaps a 27″ model.

Samsung has a 14″ OLED TV on display.

LG has a 15″ OLED on display and there’s talk of a much larger model coming soon.

Samsung displays 82″ OLED TV

Samsung has just raised the bar in the OLED TV competition:

At CES this year, Sony showed off their 1st OLED (Organic LED) TV that will go on sale, except it was a puny 11″ screen. It was a sweet looking TV though at 3mm thick and with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. But who wants 11″ of OLED when they can get 50″ of Plasma for the same price? Now Samsung just showed off an 82″ OLED with backlighting. We may even start seeing some more reasonably sized screens coming to stores soon as well. 31-inch Samsung OLED TV Samsung at CEBIT 2008

Samsung was at CEBIT 2008 in Germany with their 31″ OLED TV as well as their OLED TV roadmap:

Samsung was showing an 31” uber-thin OLED TV at CEBIT. While this is interesting, it is hardly new – except to remind us that the company is making steady progress in this area. In the past, Epson demonstrated a 40” OLED TV (2004), followed by Samsung has shown a 21” OLED TV (2005), then Samsung came back to demonstrate a 40” OLED TV too (07/2005). Between then and now, OLED TVs have gotten better, thinner and nicer, but Samsung itself said that there would be no large Samsung commercial OLED before 2010

Samsung, LG Gearing Up For OLED TV production

If OLED TV manufacturers can overcome the mass production “challenges” stated by Sony, the future of OLED TV looks very rosy indeed.

While it’s expected that mass production of OLED TV’s is at least 5 years in the future, Samsung and LG are gearing up for an early move into the OLED TV market by investing millions in the technology and setting up test lines to iron out the production quirks inherent in OLED displays currently. A very thorough video clip from IDG covering OLED TV at CES 2008. The part that interested me is the interview with the Samsung spokesperson. He states that they are very price conscious and will not release an OLED TV until it is at a price level similar to an equal sized LCD TV. That may take a while as mass production facilities aren’t up and running yet. Even Sony has stated that mass manufacturing of OLED TV’s will be a “challenge”. Enough from me, enjoy the video.

Not as good as being there of course, but here’s a clip of the latest Samsung OLED TV. The 31″ OLED TV reviews have been glowing. We can’t wait until 2010 to see these beauties in the stores.

First impressions of Samsung 31″ OLED TV at CES2008

One of the popular attractions at the Samsung display at CES2008 in Las Vegas is the Samsung 31″ OLED TV. Sony’s OLED TV offering maxes out at 27″ so Samsung has the lead in midsized OLED TV models so far. However, unlike the Sony XEL-1, neither of these OLED TV models is available yet. Samsung is still planning a release date of 2010 for larger sized OLED TV models.

Joshua Shim at aving.net has a few first day impressions of the Samsung OLED TV from Las Vegas:

“The chic, ultra-slim OLED TVs employ AM OLED panels developed by Samsung SDI, a Samsung affiliate dedicated to display production. The finished products weigh some 40 percent less than other LCD TVs of the same size while boasting a contrast ratio of 1 million to one, color gamut of 107% and brightness of 550nit. Samsung will begin commercial production of mid- to large-sized OLED TVs around 2010.”

“OLED is seen as a powerful contender to be at the center of the future display market mainstream given its very high resolution, svelte profile and extremely light weight. Electronics manufacturers have already begun exhibiting these next-generation displays at major trade shows, but Samsung is going a step further at CES 2008. The OLED is being presented as a finished TV product that features an elegant, optimized design.”
